Tiina and Peter haven’t seen each other in 25 years. Once friends living in Chicago in their 20s and 30s, their only contact has been through social media. Until today, when they will arrive in the same time and place to explore the nature of distance, of aging, and their evolved relationships to performing, all in front of a live audience.
Using structured improvisation, story, song, and movement, Tiina Morin and Peter Sciscioli offer “Old Friends”, an experiment in presence, creation, and what it may mean for the essence of a person and of a friendship to always remain the same.
Artist Bios:
Tiina Morin is an arts and cultural worker based in Marquette, Michigan. In her tenure with the City of Marquette, she has overseen the development of the city’s Cultural Trail and Trailhead and currently helps to advance public art initiatives that shape the community’s cultural landscape. Before her work in arts administration, Tiina was an interdisciplinary performer and movement artist in Chicago, rooted in Contact Improvisation, Butoh, and Estonian folk dance. In the 1990s, she studied with influential postmodern dance artists including Simone Forti, Nancy Stark Smith, and Robert Dunn. A founding member of Limbic Fix, Chicago’s first improvisation dance company, she also performed with Hedwig Dances and XSIGHT! Performance Group, among others. After a 24-year hiatus from dancing, Tiina recently returned to weekly Contact Improvisation jams here in Marquette at Be Well. Tiina is grateful to the local community and to reconnect with Peter to help rekindle a practice that has always remained quietly alive.
Peter Sciscioli is a Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary performer, creator, educator, and producer whose work encompasses dance, music, theater, and film. Since 1997, he has been creating performance works through a choreographic lens with a wide variety of collaborators throughout the world. He has worked extensively in various capacities with composer and interdisciplinary artist Meredith Monk, as a member of Jane Comfort and Company, and appeared in films, dances and operas by Jonathan Bepler/Matthew Barney, Ping Chong, DD Dorvillier, Susan Marshall and Philip Glass/Mary Zimmerman, among others. Peter has taught his approach to Voice as Movement in countries from Mexico to Bulgaria, co-initiated The Sounding Body workshop series at Movement Research in New York, and currently offers private lessons and coaching in person and online. In 2012, he founded the International Interdisciplinary Artists Consortium (IIAC), a network of artists and producers working across disciplines and cultures. Peter is delighted to be working with Tiina Morin for the inaugural Marquette Fringe Festival, and continues his work and research at home, virtually and abroad. www.petersciscioli.com
