Knowing the Land by Todd Carter
Acrylic on Canvas, Huron Mountain Club Gallery
Pictorial maps and paintings inspired by the artist’s deep connection to the Upper Peninsula wilderness
On display February-March 2025
This tribute to the spirit of Marquette and the surrounding lands offers a shared journey into the heart of the wilderness connecting people and the land. Each piece invites viewers to experience these landscapes through the artists eyes.
Rooted in exploration and research, the creative process begins with photographs and sketches, which are brought to life on canvas through hours of dedicated painting, each piece reflecting the beauty and heritage of the Upper Peninsula.
Todd Carter’s lifelong passion for the wilderness began as a child, sleeping under the stars in Copper Harbor, surrounded by the quiet presence of the land’s natural inhabitants. This deep connection led him back to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the 1970’s, where he continues to explore, learn, and paint.
