Inspirations From Nature, Two Visions by Monica & Marvin Zehnder Colored Pencil & Ceramics On display in the Deo Gallery
This exhibit showcases two different viewpoints of nature and highlights the contrast between two-dimensional and three-dimensional presentations. Each approach offers its own solutions and visual strengths.
Marv’s sculptural forms and clay pots reflect his lifelong interest in plants and gardening, drawing inspiration from both his greenhouse and garden. His work features a subtle range of color created through handmade glazes and slips.
In contrast, Monica began exploring colored pencil in 2017, using Marv’s garden as a source of inspiration. The slow and methodical nature of colored pencil often requires many weeks or months to complete a single image. She has also expanded her process to include acrylics, metallic watercolor, gel pens, markers and cut paper, in her works.
Marv has a BA of Art, MA in Painting and Ceramics from Michigan State and an MFA in Ceramic Design from Alfred University, Alfred, NY. He was selected for a fellowship to Haeger Potteries in Dundee, IL. He is a retired Professor of Ceramic Design and Professor Emeritus from Northern Michigan University and was selected as a Distinguished Faculty recipient. He exhibited at Art On The Rocks for many years and has had his work shown locally and nationally.
Monica has a BS in Art from Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, NY and an MFA in Ceramic Design from Alfred University in Alfred, NY. She retired from teaching art for the Gwinn Schools and also taught adjunct classes for Northern Michigan University. She was selected for Michigan Art Educator of the year by the Michigan Art Education Association. Her work has been shown locally and state wide.
Monica is now 86 and Marv is 93.
